Torrevieja Overview

Torrevieja (translates to “Old Tower”) is a very popular destination for tourists and also for foreigners moving to the Costa Blanca. There are many British, Scandanavians, Irish and Germans living there. 

Torrevieja is a cosmopolitan city, which is full of life and has a great mix of Spanish, English and Irish bars, as well as a large selection of restaurants. Due to the large number of English people living and travelling to Torrevieja, you don’t necessarily have to speak Spanish, as many of the locals that work there speak English. There are also 2 international schools in Torrevieja.

There is a lovely beachfront and promenade, lined with shops, bars and restaurants, which are next to the Blue Flag beaches, Playa del Cura being the most popular.

Torrevieja offers a central location, which is very affordable to live and buy property. There is also easy access to 2 airports (Región de Murcia Airport and Alicante Airport).

The weather in Torrevieja is mostly sunny all year round. The warmest month is August, with an average maximum temperature of around 31ºC. The coldest month of December, has an average high temperature of around 14ºC.

Things to do in Torrevieja

Visit the beaches

Torrevieja has lovely sandy beaches. Playa del Acequion, Playa de la Mata (longest beach at 2.3km long), Playa de los Naufragos, Playa de los Locos and Playa del Cura.

Walking and Cycling Trails

There are a few scenic trails where you can spend a few hours or the whole day. Some include Via Verde, La Mata Natural Park and also along the seaside.

Take the kids to Aquapark

This small water park is great for families to visit in the summer to cool off and let the kids enjoy themselves.

Water Sports in Torrevieja

There are many water sports on offer in Torrevieja such as; Jet Skiing, Wakeboarding, Parasailing, Paddleboarding and Flyboarding.

Visit the salt lakes

There are 2 salt lakes (“Salinas” in Spanish) in and around Torrevieja; Las Salinas de Torrevieja and Laguna De La Mata. Las Salinas de Torrevieja is a pink colour (caused by the algae Dunadiella Salina) and is around 1,400 hectares in size. It is connected to the sea by a canal known as the Acequion, which was made in the 13th century to get salt from the sea. During breeding season, the lake is home to over 2,000 flamingos. Laguna De La Mata has a green-blue colour and has a lovely park around it, which has trails that you can walk along.

Shopping in Torrevieja

There are plenty of shops to choose from. There is a shopping centre called Habaneras, which has a selection of shops and restaurants. If you want more shops, then you can take a 10 minute drive to La Zenia Boulevard, the largest outdoor shopping centre in the Alicante Province. As well as a great selection of shops and restaurants, it has an entertainment area for children to keep them occupied.

Transport in Torrevieja

There is an efficient bus service in Torrevieja. There are links to the main places in Costa Blanca from Torrevieja from the central bus station, including direct buses to Alicante Airport.

Torrevieja is conveniently located on the main national road (N-332). The N-332 runs for 386km from Cartagena to Valencia. The road can get congested, especially in the summer, as a lot of the way it is single carriageway. The AP-7 highway is only located about 10km away and this road takes you along the meditaranean coast, from the border of France and Spain to Vera in the Almeria province in the south.
